Days 1 & 2: Baroque Magic in Salzburg
Arrive in Salzburg. Stroll the historic Getreidegasse lane to Mozart’s birthplace, with ornate wrought-iron guild signs hanging above snow-covered lanes. Take the fortress funicular up to Hohensalzburg Castle for panoramic views over baroque copper domes and the snowcapped Alps. Warm up at Café Tomaselli with an authentic Melange coffee and Sachertorte.
Day 3: Postcard Perfection in Hallstatt
Drive 75 minutes east through the Salzkammergut lake district to Hallstatt. In winter, this 16th-century village slips into peaceful quiet. Take the funicular up to the Skywalk viewing platform, walk through Market Square draped in holiday wreaths, and enjoy lunch at a lakeside inn serving fresh lake trout and hot apple strudel.
Day 4: Zell am See & Top of Salzburg Glacier
Drive west along scenic alpine valleys to Zell am See, where grand historic hotels line the frozen lake shore. Ride the cable car up to the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier (3,029m) to visit the “Top of Salzburg” viewing platform overlooking high alpine peaks and the Hohe Tauern National Park.
Days 5 & 6: Imperial Innsbruck & The Nordkette
Arrive in Innsbruck, the two-time Winter Olympic host city nestled in the Inn River valley. Admire the Golden Roof (Goldenes Dachl) in the medieval old town. From the city center, board the futuristic Hungerburg funicular designed by Zaha Hadid, connecting to the Nordkette cable car. In just 20 minutes, you are standing at 2,256 meters looking down at the colorful city below.
Day 7: Wattens & Departure
Visit the surreal underground Chambers of Wonder at Swarovski Crystal Worlds in nearby Wattens, featuring crystalline art installations by international artists, before completing your loop back to Salzburg or Munich Airport.
🚗 Austrian Autobahn Vignette
To drive on Austria’s motorways (Autobahn), you must purchase a toll sticker (Vignette) or digital vignette online. Most rental cars picked up in Austria include this, but always verify before getting on the highway to avoid steep automatic toll camera fines.
